Alpha Gen 1 Lower Unit Drive Gear Removal

I am trying to remove the lower unit driveshaft to replace it.<br /><br />Have got the nut and washer securing the gear off but the gear won't come off the shaft. The driveshaft retainer is also off and the bearing cup is off. Tried rattling, a bit of prying against the propshaft, dirty looks and cussing....no good. <br /><br />Any hints/tips on how to get it off is desperately needed.<br /><br />Thanks.<br /><br />Qystan

I just back the nut off the pinion shaft most of the way till it contacts the prop shaft. Then just hit the prop shaft with a rubber mallet and it will pop the shaft loose from the pinion.

Its a tapered fit on the shaft, follow dons advice

Tan,<br /><br />Did you get the carrier and retainer nut out, then remove the nut (as Don said) from the end of the driveshaft?<br /><br />Chris..........

Don, Doc<br />Great, will try the mallet.<br /><br />Chris,<br />Yes, all the bits are out, its just the taper holding it. Wasn't sure if I could bring a mallet to it.<br /><br />Btw, it was great meeting up with you. You've got me dying for the lobsters. I'll have to take you up on that. I'll bring the wasabe and soya. Mallet worked. <br /><br />This mallet thing is really wonderful, gotta get more and bigger ones!! <br /><br />Thanks guy.
