Hey guys noob here. My folks have an 89 3.0 Alpha gen 1.
My dad owns the boat but since i was the captian yesterday. We were heading back to our launch site and about 3-4 miles from where we were. I had the boat running at about 28mph and all of a sudden the boat came to an abrupt stop. Scary to say the least. Thought we struck something underwater. Shut it down and inspected prop, no obvious damage.
Got under way again but boat wouldn't plane out at full throttle and felt like it was lugging. Upon investigating today at home. When shifted in fwd the prop spins cw and stops ccw. When spun cw it clunks, not click like it should when engine is off. When i put it in rev, prop spun freely both ways. So we are assuming soemthing went out in the lower unit. Shift cable was replaced 5 years ago when drive was removed and lower seperated from upper. Pulled the upper cover on the drive and not metal seen at least up there.
With the engine running and in gear at around 2000 rpm there was bad grinding/ clanking noise. I know that can't be normal.
Drive lube has been changed every year, along with other fluids.
Any help is appreciated.
