I had the the upper and lower drive, Alpha 1 MR, removed from the boat. When putting it back on, I made sure the shifter thing on the lower unit was centered, and was locked in forward, as well as the shifter itself. PUt it back together , but its not connected correctly. I tried lowering the lower unit, aligning it., and no go. Here are the pics in Forward, Neutral and Reverse.

I really hope i did ot really mess this one up. I never want to to take the upper out again. Hopefully youy all have a easy way to fix it.

Easy Button? Nope. You need to drop the lower. turn splined shaft fully clockwise.(fwd) install to upper with shoe in a straight line.
Have control box in full fwd

You are missing the flat washer. Look at the next to last page of this .pdf file.

You guys are great. So to summarize,

1. Drop the lower unit.
2. Put in the missing washer, that sitting on my bench.
3. Dont quite get this one, turn the propeller shaft? Clockwise for shoe? What s the shoe?

Make sure contorl box is in forward.

LOL, I just now noticed, the lower shift shaft is also backwards.

It's such a good thing to work without a manual. You just never know what you can do wrong until you really try.

It is backwards supposed to look like below. Once you have the washer in place, turn the lower shift shaft (short splined shaft in front) all the way clockwise. Turn the prop counterclockwise until it locks, and hold CCW pressure on it with a bungee (you are now locked in forward). Make sure the control handle is in forward and put er back together making sure the intermediate and upper shift shafts connect properly.

Wow! I do believe you are converting people at least one at a time to use the manual (and the "right" manual, at that)! At least one could hope:lol:

Just did this same job about 6 weeks ago. You need all the parts in the right places to make it all fit together.

Ok, Ok, i Do have the manual, the manual says the short side forward, so if you look at the profile, there is a shorter and longer edge. I knew it was in backwards when I took the pics, but new I had other problems. Kudos to the man with the washer.

Regardless, I will gladly take the abuse if I get great information. Many of us learn by messing things up, as I now have learned twice the amount of info about this drive. I have previously only had Volvo or Inboards. Now of course the stupid little o-ring between the upper and the gimble, it was a tad to big. Froze it, and hopefully it held.

Now onto a new problem. Should past a pic of this boat. Lots of love went into her putting her back to original, except the stereo of course. That went to the smithsonian.

Not meant to abuse at all!! (I've learned that way quite a bit too!):watermelon: Just make sure you have the "right" manual and it shouldn't lead you down the wrong paths like the Seloc and Clymer manuals often do.

Your manual doesn't say Clymers or Seloc on the cover does it ?????

Here is the manual you should have, it's from Mercruiser. Click Here to download.

Ok, here comes the abuse again, lol. At least it helped me diagnosis the sensor in the distributor. Although, since it was in pieces. For me, the more resources the better! Thanks.

It started instantly, the Sierra piece is a little goofy, using the screws to connect the wires and then shrink wrap. I just love 350's. which I could put it back into my Yukon XL.

. No worries, it's painful, but if we don't burn the boat, its all forgotten when the boat works...hopefully...
