You can reuse the old one if in good shape.

A good kit should not only come with that seal, but come with a spacer for installing it correctly. Its a piece of plastic that fits over the seal and you push it down with it, and it makes sure you have it installed correctly.

Not wanting to hurt iboats sales, but I would go to you local merc dealer. They keep a ton of them in stock.

PS: Mine looked good enough to reuse -- but without that spacer you are gambling that you got it back on correctly.

If you get a quicksilver impeller repair kit it'll come with the seal and the installation tool. It's called a face seal. Kit Part # 47-43026Q06

Thanks, all.

So what does that spacer do? Can you just press it down to the pump housing? My manual says if you have a washer handy, that could work.

The face seal is supposed to be installed at a certain height above the pump housing. The little plastic ring (installation tool) allows you to slide it down the driveshaft and set it at the proper height above the pump. I have not seen in the mercruiser manual the advice of using a washer, which makes me think you are not working with the Mercruiser manual. Download it for free in the adults only sticky at the top of this forum. There are great diagrams, and installation instructons for this. It may help bring some clarity to this for you.

Re: Alpha 1 Gen II Water Pump V-Ring

I am no mechanic or engineer, but when I replaced mine, I thought that seal looked like the weak link of the entire system. It sits on a shaft at a certain height, staying put because of the tightness of the seal around the shaft, with the bottom having a spring load against the top of the steel water pump housing essentially from the stiffness of the rubber, while it spins around and around, creating friction.

If that seal goes, water is going where it is not suppose to be.

I would not take a chance on getting it wrong.

If the seal fails all that will happen is a little air COULD be sucked into the impeller. You MIGHT notice a slight rise in engine temp, maybe...

You have more risk of problems if you don't use the alignment pins when putting the housing back on.

That said, I use a new seal every time... :D:D:D

That is good to know -- I assumed water would come out, not air come in. So its not such a weak link after all.

Scared to ask, but what manual do you have? Seloc or Clymers?

You do realize there are OEM Service manuals available for download up in the adults only sticky don't you?

I was replacing my impeller this afternoon and struggling with this face seal. This seal just rides on top of the water pump housing? I have a new seal and tool.
