can a 2006 alpha 1 gen 2 be run the old conventional way of fill the leg with oil to the vent screw and not have the monitor bottle attatched????

Ayuh,... But,..the line to the bottle will have to be capped off....

My first question is "WHY" would you want to.
If it's just a curiosity question, yes, you could run with out the bottle there. The original Gen II drives from 91 to 93 didn't have the reservoir. They did have a dipstick on the top cap of the drive so you could check the oil. Even if it was in the water (as long as the cap was above water) But in reality, you need to block off some things to prevent other problems.

all the proper things have been blocked off and its coz i have put a gen2 onto a gen 1 transom shield

Ayuh,... So how did you adapt the Shifter linkage,..??

quote frome marine engineer who is doing it " the gimble housing is a gen2 the leg is a gen2 and the shield is a gen1" and i did ask him about the shift linkage and he said it matched up perfect.
im beginning to hate boats now lol
