Here's my take... I can't actually see why that sleeve is there, but if Merc put it there, it needs to be there. Manufacturers tend to REMOVE as much as possible (to save money). Generally, if there's something there, it's for a reason... In short, if it were mine, I'd pull the drive and put the sleeve on...
