I have an Alpha1 Gen2 that developed a gear oil leak. The oil is coming from a hole beneath one of the bolt/nuts that attach the stern drive to the outdrive, - as seen in the pics. The hole seems to be a vent of some type?? Anyway, any idea of what to look for if the oil is coming out of this hole? Shifting mechanism o-rings?

Ayuh,... Welcome Aboard,...

It could be any 1 of many seals,...
Take it apart, 'n see which 1 it is, or have the whole shebang resealed...

and once you've replaced all your seals and o-rings... don't forget the quad-ring (the ring/seal that goes in the small hole where the upper and lower unit connect) in the oil passage. Without that... you'll have this same problem and be scratchin' your head over it.

Thanks for the replies.

So the hole that the oil is coming from is a general weep hole, - not specific to a certain area of the drive? If that's the case then I'll plan on replacing all seals and water pump wear parts.

For this would you recomment removing the complete outdrive, and then seperating the lower half on a bench? Or can I remove the lower half with the drive mounted?

I've had this boat since 2007 and it's been rock solid reliable, - with light usage. Regular oil changes, etc, - and I havn't had the need to remove the outdrive to date. So I'm in some unfamiliar territory.

Thanks,
John

you need to remove the whole drive anyway, this should be done every year for regular maintenance, lubing drive shaft, checking bellows, checking alignment, gimbal bearing, etc. Download the manual at the top of this forum, adults only. Removing the whole drive is a few bolts and cheap gasket. Spend some time looking around this site, its a great resource. Good luck

Thank for all of the info. I'll be pulling the drive for an inspection and reseal.

Thanks again,
John
