hello
I have not seen the tool for the merc but I made one for yamaha, and OMC made one so maybe there is one. if you try it without removing the carrier make sure the shaft surfaces dont get nicked.

Found it, its on MercStuff page 15. Went through every page, it had to be the last

At the moment I can't figure out how to get the seals off. Pry with screwdriver? Punch/drill holes and hook and pull them out? All seems to be tricky and may damage the shaft. Is there a trick to this...c'mon let us in on the trade secret :D ...If it is a trade secret, will let this rest.

I've seen one shaft with battle scars that its a wonder that it still seals at all.

There is a "Trade Secret" it's called pulling the carrier out of the drive, then replacing the seals. :D

hahahah
you guys down under the equator do everything backwards :) :)
actually its best tp pull the carrier once every year or at least two. helps keep the gear case from splitting due to corrosion. I have some mercs and yammies that I service and have since 1991 and they have never split a case and the lowers always drop off and I never use a torch on them
but then again some of my customers read and head the service maint .
so when they do get a net or some mono that cuts up a seal its an 1 1/2 hour operation to change it. not a 10 hour ordeal with drill bits and heat.
if the carrier nut is tight drill it in 3 spots with a 1/4 drill and crack the spanner nut out.

Yes, after the last lesson, the corrosion ate away enough of the case retainer threads to render a good casing useless  . I will be doing annual cleanups on this.

By the way, got the SEI lower unit, looks good. In process of mounting it and going out this weekend.

No winter here :D :D sun, sun
...ouch! too much sun!
