So I cleaned up the ring with a brass brush, green pad and marykate acid wash. This thing is severely pitted. I drilled pout and retapped the broken trim screws 10-32 and the broken ground screw10-32. Do I replace it or is this just cosmetic? I plan on two thin coats of Moller chromatic and three coats of rustoleum hard hat gloss black. Its not pretty at all and I don't need it to be smooth. I just want to walleye fish in Lake Erie. I can get a better one on ebay for 150.00 but is that necessary? This restoration of the drive is very labor intensive. I severely underestimated the labor and commitment needed. Please advise and comment. These pics are before I cleaned it so there is much more exposed metal.

So I'm not understanding the term seal area. Sorry. The grease goes down from the top of the pin and comes out at an elevation in the center of the bronze race that's in the housing. There is a lip seal on the bottom of the pin. There was grease between the race and the seal. I searched for a how to post. Do you know of one? Thanks for helping me. I appreciate your patience with me...

In the third pic ,that recessed area gets a seal to keep water out of the bushing area.If you look at the pic I posted it shows the corrosion buildup from a lack of grease in that area. Once the seal is worn away water leaks into the boat from the steering arm area. Put a grease gun on that fitting and see where the grease come out.

Doc the lower image is what I have now. Square shafts not spline. So I already have the bushing and seal.

And to keep the rust away from the seal you need the grease fitting to get grease in there. Did you watch the video? The method in the video can be used on assembled transom housings

Yes I did watch it doc. I have grease in that area now from the internal galley inside the pin. It's the only part on the outdrive that I can keep. Everything else is toast. Thanks
