The drive will fit except maybe for the shaft that fits into the motor. But those can be changed. All you'd need is a U-Joint press. We're talking whole drives. Mixing uppers and lowers gets a bit more sticky.

No, you can not put a Gen II Drive on a Gen I transom shield.

Ayuh,..........

Willy,.... I think you'll find that the Alpha 1 Gen. II is compatible with None of it's predecessors,........

There's Alot of Interchangeablities between the Pre-Alphas,+ the Alpha 1.........

The Only driveshaft Issue I know of is the Shorter shaft for the early In-line motors,..
Rather than the Longer shaft used with the V-motors...............

The Longer shaft is used for All of the Merc. drives, besides the In-line motors,.....
Matter of fact,.... Even the Bravos use the Same Shaft.................

With hearly's 4.3l engine,.................
The Input Drive Shaft is the Only part that Is interchangeable with the Alpha 1 Gen. II.................... :D

Re: Alpha 1 Gen 1 for Gen 2 drive

Getting a drive resealed is a lot cheaper than a new drive, and the skegs can be replaced.
The water pump impellers should be replaced every couple of years even with a new drive, snd the bellows isn't part of the drive itself so those two items shouldn't be part of the thought process for drive replacement.
I would say having the drive inspected and resealed would be the way to go unless a lot of damage to gears and bearings and shafts are found during the reseal.
