Alpha 1 Gen 1? 84 SeaRay Bellows replacement

I see there have been posts of several links to service manuals. Unfortunately the ones that I find that seem to have the index, but not the "rest of the story". Alpha 1 Gen I for my 1984 Sea Ray appear to only have cover information. I was able to get enough info to remove my outdrive and replace my impeller. But, now I've decided to try and change all of the rubber bellows/hose since I have the drive off, the parts there are close to 10 years old. They don't leak but since I'm selling the boat, I'd feel better if I had the peace of mind knowing I did the best for my potential buyer.

Thanks....I am printing it to take to the barn. Any tips or tricks you'd like to share? Although a seasoned mechanic, I am outdrive impaired! Looks as though I can get by with a little easier work.. The holes and plugs are already installed in the upper...

Pay attention to the way the clamps are installed, you'll want to do the same way.....
Pay attention to the way the bellows is marked with regard to it its positioning.....
Dry fit the front on so you will get a feel of how far it needs to go on.....
Use bellows adhesive......
You might as well replace the shift cable as long as you have it off anyway.........:)

Thanks...That's what I'm gathering from earlier posts...replace the shift cable...I'm beginning to wonder if my potential buyers are worth the investment...time and money.:(

It will cost ya a little over $100, a & a day's work....
Well worth it, imho......
If the bellows fail, you are looking at a con$iderbly larger expenditure.....;)

Is there some type of seal on the shift shaft? Should that be replaced also, or is it just a bearing?

Haut, can you give a little more explanation. I keep seeing this:

18-2622 Bell Housing Bushing (update) Kit
$27.62
18-2622
Replaces #23-805041A2. Updates older Alpha-I to "new" shift shaft seal. Keeps the water out of bellows and shift cable.

I want to make sure when I change my bellows that I am getting everything I need. I want to replace this seal if there is a possibility the old style is allowing water in to the bellows. Also, can you tell me why some kits use exhaust bellows and now there is an exhaust tube? What are the differences and why is one better than the other. Thanks for the help!

You can replace it if you want, but not neccessary, imo.....
Water will not get in your bellows without it....
The exhaust bellows/tube perform the same function, except the tube only attaches to the transom side, which makes it way easier to install....
If the present one looks decent, leave it....
Even if it leaked it would not matter......
