Is it a big job to replace the exhaust boot that goes from the transom to the outdrive on an alpha 1 1987? I am about to buy a boat and noticed that it was cracked in a few spots, but it is so cold here I could not get a good look.

Not a bad job at all. Remove outdrive by pulling 6 nuts and trim cyl. retainer shaft as you would when greasing the U Joints, then the bellows will be open and accesible. Order bellows kit and outdrive gskt kit. Chk exhaust bellows and engine coupler alignment as well.

Sorry….I thought I did post it there. I must not have been paying attention.
Is there any harm in using it that way?

If the exhaust bellows is bad, the odds are the other bellows are also bad......
you can run with NO exhaust bellows, with No problems... But, if Any of the others leak, you've got big problems......
If you decide to replace All the bellows, change out the lower shift cable while your in that far... it's Cheap insurance.....

If the other boots look cracked or dry rotted I would replace them all. but really don't need the exhaust boot all it does is directs exhaust from the engine out through the lower unit behind the prop. I would rather have thru-hull exhaust and keep that heat out of drive they are comming out with tips that have baffles in them to quiet them down.most of the newer drives have holes in the boot to let water out some have only what looks like a big hose a couple of inches long just enough to join them when the drive is down.one more item might want to check the boot from the manifold to the transom and the baffle insidethe stack.

b. ganon:

Regarding exgaust bellows.....I consider removal of an outdrive a "big job", particularly if you haven't done it before, lack a good work space or don't have a good array of tools. Outdrives are heavy, require a stand of some sort when working on them and a certain amount of know-how is needed. For a novice, or someone with limited time and no garage, this job could be a problem.

Once you do it though, you'll have gained a lot of knowledge and won't ever want to let some one else do it for you again. Prenty of time before Sping.
