Can anyone tell me when the Alpha 1 was produced and when it became (I think) Generation 2 and then ultimately Alpha 2? I think it all started in 83. Right?

Not sure when the Name Alpha I started, it came after the R and MR. but it ended in late 1990 Then the Alpha I Gen II started in 1991. They are presently known as Alpha I Gen II. Never heard of an Alpha 2.

Does the term "Model 1" and "Alpha 1" refer to the same thing? Some manuals use different terminalogy.

Thanks, I got Alpha2 and generation II confused. So an engine manufactured in 87 is Alpha 1. That helps.

I Believe that was when the drives went from the Rounded housings of the Mod.1, to the Squaresh looking Alpha housings......
That may have also been when the bearings on the vertical shaft went from the Preload Pin to the Nut preload under the waterpump.......

There was also the Mod.0,... Which is Pre-1967....

Re: ALPHA 1 Evolution...

The Alpha I was the first to have the flat top. From the MR on back they had the ring.

Lots of things changed over the years. Including the bolt pattern on the bellhousings where the drive bolts on, the gimbal bearings, internal parts in the drive, trim pumps, trim cylinders, and on and on. I wouldn't even attempt to try and find out what all the changes were.
