Hi,
1987 Alpha 1. Replacing all the bellows, including the water hose (3/4) that runs from the bell housing fitting to the plastic water tube that fits through the transom assembly into the boat. The spec for that hose is that it is 13 7/8 inches long. The one I have is 13 inches. Will the lack of the 7/8 of an inch cause a major problem like chaffing on the ujoint bellows or some other catatrophic failure?
Thanks Roman

Re: Alpha 1 Bell housing Water hose length?

while i don't know the consequences of using the wrong length hose. i do know that the job of replacing that hose is nothing but a drag in the biggest sense of the word... for the cost of the hose. i'd have me whatever the right legnth is per the service manual...

as a side note.... i've replaced that hose once on my 1 drive. 13 7/8'' sounds about right for what i cut it to. can't rembember... anyways. i couldn't for the life of me get that stupid hose onto the transom shield ... it didn't go on far engough... this is the consiquece..

the hose was cut to the right length, but i wasn't insalled all the way onto the nipple... enough to hose clamp it. but not far enough...
i didn't overheat all summer, why i don't know... this issue about my boat needs to be addressed........ the cat's out of the bag... i was for warned too. dons told me in a thread when i did it.. if ya don't have time to do it right the first time.... well, you know the rest... i'll be finding out when i go for it... i reckon in spring.. just really can't deal with the worry of a overheat much anymore.... can't believe i didn't already have one really....
one last thought, i was told to use mercruiser power tuner i believe was the product to install this hose.. i didn't use it. musta done it on a sunday when the mercruiser dealer wasn't open, whatever... i used soap and water... that wasn't good enough....

finally, if ya can't get the hose on like i couldn't. minus 7/8 woulda probably been about right... grrr. if my hose was that length i'd probably be cool...... but that's pretty hit and miss... do it right. proper length hose. try the power tuner... whatever ya can to be sure that hose goes on all the way.......

Ziggy,
That is one kinked hose. I did find out that you need to use the correct hose and the correct length. Other wise the hose will kink. It is a tight fit, but it has to be that hose. You are right, you need to get the hose all the way on the barbs, other wise you run into what you have in the picture. Kinking, chaffing, etc.

Ayuh,....

You also have to get the Pitch of the hose, Just Right,....

Sometimes, just twisting 1 end or the other, on it's barb, will cure the collapsed hose problem...
