I am new to the board and was hoping to get some advice. I have tried searching this board but still need some answers. I have 1987 Johnson 150. I am premixing 50 to 1. I really get alot of smoke at start up. Recently changed the vro pump withone from DTI as I learned of them from this board. I cannot find any leaks. Compression is good with no issues there. I will try the choke to trouble shoot it this weekend but I am at a loss. I have read othesre with this problem but seems the replacement of the VRo has worked for them. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also I am using NGK plugs with evin/john oil.

First, lose the NGK plugs...use Champions for the Johnson/Evinrude 150, 155 (90º crossflow V6) 1978 - 1987 UL77V or L16V Surface Gap N/A

If you are premixing 50 to one, and running the VRO, it going to smoke period.

Your basically running 25:1 - the same as breaking
in a new engine. Would be a problem if it DIDN'T smoke.

Addition to previous reply: No need to premix oil/
gas if the replacement for your VRO mixes 50:1

Re: Alot of smoke at start up. Please help

sorry for not explaining in detail. I am only running the fuel side of the vro pump. The oil side has been closed off. Is there any other oil to use?? or do I have an issue with the carb. I am real careful on the mixture so it is not more than 50 to 1. Thanks again

If you do a lot of low-speed (idling) running, before shut-down,the engine could very well be oil rich at the next start-up. The 50:1 oil/fuel ratio is for lubing at high speed. The engine actually requiers evry little oil at low speed. That's the reason for the excess oil.

c/6
Hooty

I'm with Hooty on this one...my 225 Ocean Pro will smoke ALOT when I start it up. I premix my fuel at 50:1. Most people have to idle at the boat ramp prior to loading the boat and when I get home I idle the motor again for about 10 min. to flush the saltwater out. So that means the next time I crank up the motor at the ramp the motor smokes ALOT. Nothing to worry about. I would suggest that you change to CHAMPION plugs for that motor. They do run differently than the NGK's

Using a quality synthetic oil will reduce the amount of smoke considerably! Although not completly! I have used it in the past and am going to use it in my Merc 150 next season when I get it running right! Also premix!

LubeDude

I'll give ya a 9.9 for the tag on that one, LubeDude........ :D :D
Use the NGKs' for lure retrievers, or possibly fish structure. Ditto on the Champion plugs...
gapped .030 for all around use, or .040 for alot of idling or trolling....... :)

Use the factory recommended Champion QL78YC plugs gapped at .030". FICHT Ram oil is semi-synthetic and cuts down on the smoke a lot. Make sure the thermostats are warming each head to about 140 degrees or you will get smoke and a carbon buildup.
