I have a 1994 mercruiser 4.3 liter and I’m replacing the seals on the lower unit however when I took the unit off the spinner but is missing all of the teeth so the spinner but wrench won’t work. Does anyone have any ideas to remove this without damaging the housing?

Please don't start more than 1 thread on the same issue or post in ancient threads.

Now that that's out of the way - Your talking about the cover nut that holds the prop shaft carrier in the lower unit.

Drill a series of small holes and break it out. This one of the few times where the preferred tool is a BFH.

Yes drill to collapse it and remove-- as Ga Boater suggested // be careful not to damage the threads on the housing

A multifunction oscillating tool works wonders with these types of calamities. Drill per above advice, then slice between the holes with a metal cutting blade. ...per wellcraft...stay away from the housing threads.

Sorry on the mistakes was trying to figure the site out. Where should I drill the holes? The nut is now flush with the housing. I would have to drill the holes just deep enough to penetrate the nut but not the threads?

thanks for all the responses.

First, that retainer is not deep enough. You can fix that with the new one. Drill three holes, about 3/16" into the face, in a row just inside the inner edge to tangent with the hsg bore. Tape a depth mark on the drill the thickness of the retainer. If you over drill you'll nick the face of the carrier, but that's ok. Do this again 180 Deg on the other side of the retainer.
