V6 merc 150. Recently has starter rebuilt and put in new battery. All is fine. Ran it last week with no problems and has run great all season, save for a low battery problem recently. Today went out and she turns and turns but did not start. I noticed small amount of fuel leaking from the bulb. So I put a new line and bulb on it, cleaned the plugs, and checked fuel pump. It is working.
I got it to start in the driveway and idled it for a bit seemed ok. Turned it off then tried to restart, would not start. I should add that I have recently put on an over the hub chopper on it and ran it with no issue twice. It replaced the old aluminum thru hub.
I noticed after I ran it briefly that there was a decent amount of carbon and an almost gravely gook on the prop. ( It was flooded pretty good at the river) I took the prop off
and she started right up. Idled fine ect... Turned it off, and tried again, she would not fire. This Merc is always a great starter... Waited a bit and got it to fire briefly but it would kill.

Could the restricted exhaust clog up my engine to make it a hard start?( Prop is off now). Where else should I look as I have done most of the basic stuff that I know. Until today this Merc has run great, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Howdy, Kevlar. Most of your problem is as mysterious to me as to you, but: running an outboard without the prop is extremely hazardous. Most of my books simply say DON'T do it (capitalization theirs).

Good luck.

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)

JB does that apply to it being in neutral with the muffs on too? I had assumed it was related to high rpms with no load to hold them down when in gear. I should add it was only on for about 10 or 15 seconds with the prop off with the muffs.

What do you think of this? We had a long hot summer 80s and 90s lows in the 60s and 70s. We had a dramatic turn to the cold side of the force. 50s 60s for highs and low mid 40s for lows. Would that make the engine more prone to gum up? Stuck float ect.... I went from running 3 times a week to about 1 time every week to 10 days.

Seems fine now. Threw it on the charger, waited a day and now it seems the issues have left....

Wise words of advise:

"Problems that go away on their own, come back on there own"

Keep digging.
