Is it normal to need several turns on the adjusting nut to get in correct alignment?

If there is a gross mis-alignment , Yes. What work are you doing to question the alignment

Well after rotating 90, 180, and 270, 3 places are perfect and one is tight. I plan to install the drive 180 deg from the tight spot. Indeed up at a turn and a half on the nut.

If that is for a newly installed engine, yes. If it's as part of the annual service (or another maintenance item) and hasn't been disturbed since the previous (correct) alignment check, then it indicates a mount problem somewhere. Either of the 2 rear mounts most likely, or the rubber in the front mount. Your 120 is 1984, that would make the mounts 31 years old. Yep, time to replace.

it was part of a bellows, gimble bearing replace. the boat still has a little life in it and I don't use it much. mostly trolling and drift fishing.

That much change between service/checks and now is indicative of failing rubbers. Time to pull the engine and replace both rear mounts and the front mount.
