been workin on my drive and gimble assy. on alignment.

i've got it down to being able to put the alignment bar in nice and smooth till it hits(bottoms out in the coupler) the coupler at 0*, 90*, 180*, but at 270* i feel resistance as the alignment bar is hiting i think at the 11 o'clock posistion. it's just the last little bit that catches, but it is catchin. i'm not hip to useing an alingment bar yet. so the feel is new to me. it's going in smooth and removeing smooth. though not with 2 fingers. more like grasp it. ya can feel the metal to metal when it's contacting the inside dia. of the coupler at the 270* rotation + have ya to give it a yank to get the alignment bar started out. once it's free from the minor contact, it's smooth to remove again. i'm just wonderin if i should be reattempting this adj. for this contact at 270*........... yes, i'm lubin the alignment bar liberally with blue mercruiser coupler and spline grease....

Put the drive on and don't worry about it.

Re: alignment question

I bet if you put the alignment bar in and hit it with your fist sideways on all four sides. you would find your alignment to be almost perfect. The gimball bearing can be a hair off giving you a false reading......by smacking the bar with it in all the way, the bearing will come into alignment. As Don said, put the drive on and don't worry about it till next year when you do your water pump. Remember to tighten all your mounts!

Don's an idiot, why would you listen to that hack? ;)

I like to see the spline pattern the grease leaves on the bar. If it's sticking and you don't see any spline marks 180 degrees from the stick then I would personally be inclined to adjust it.

Then again I am a stickler for this stuff. Both my local VP shops tell me if the drive shaft goes on smooth then it's fine. The alignment bar is less forgiving.

BUT I have found you can play with this adjustment all day and end up chasing your tail.

So basically I am agreeing that Don is right.. I've added nothing to this have I? Lets put it this way. If I had a nickel for every time Don told me to stop screwing with it and run it I'd be rich. And he's never been wrong..

But I'd be lying if I said I wouldn't be trying to get that last little bit of resistance out ;)

yep, that'd be the way i think about it. i just can't get it out. in every attempt, if anything it hangs up at the 11 o'clock. i will admit. i've not done anything to the rear engine mounts.....?????

the spline grease patter at 11 o'clock it's flater than at 4 o'clock.....best i understand from talkin to people in the know, is put it back together......ie' merc techs at my dealer... + the "board"..........:).... thanks folks, yer the greatest......

Hmmmmm. This from a man that rebuilt his engine half a dozen times because he wouldn't check his fuel lines for air leaks like he was asked to about a kazillion time. Don't worry Mike, mums the word, I won't tell anyone :D

I am sure Maryann would claim that is a more pathalogical behavior than forgetful ;)
