Algae in H20 tank? (I Think?)

I recently purchased a 24’ Sea Ray Laguna. I have a 30 gal. water tank for freshwater wash down. There must be algae in the tank. I can only run the pump for 30-60 seconds before the filter gets clogged. I clean and start over but that’s a huge pain in the A$$.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to clean out the tank? Is there an additive to take care of this?

Thanks

Do you know what the tank is made of? Before adding any chemicals, it would be very prudent to make sure that anything used will not affect the material that it's made of, whether it be an epoxy wall, or plastic, or whatever...

Short of that, you might be able to siphon out the old water with an old garden hose... They also make a drill-powered pump that I've seen at Northern tools & at Harbor Freight that costs about $4. I would consider it a "disposable" item to get the old liquid out of the water tank.

You might be able to use something like a swimming pool shock treatment in there... Be sure to run a few tank-fulls of water through to get all the old crud & chemicals out..

G'Luck! and let us know how it turns out.

Rex S.

Great idea on the drill pump. Thanks Purple D. I tried to siphon but was not able to do so in the water very easily. Pump should work much better (providing it doesn’t get clogged too).

I’ll try that and do it several times to clean out tank. I’m not sure what the tank is made of. What about using bleach after a few rinses to clean it out? The tank is only for fresh water wash down so it’s not like I’m drinking it. I’ve also heard that you can stabilize with vinegar after bleach (not sure of mixture though)?

Thanks for the input.

Muddog You could also use a cheap bildge pump and run discharge out side boat, use long piece of water hose. After drained out Rinse with with one cup of bleach per gallon of water then rinse with fresh water. let bleach water stand about 1/2 hour of so, will kill all algea.
Mike E

"Admiral Crab Bait" (he received a honorable promotion from me for his building skills!) is right. An additional source would be a pool supply house. I use non-chlorinated chemicals in my hot tub that are safe for plastics, epoxy and humans.

You may have to dig deeper and replace lines which could be "mineral clogged too".

Bob
