I have a 1988 Yamaha 175 2 stroke on a 1989 winner tournament 2000. Just got it and took it out for short run. I was getting smoke from motor like it was getting oil and no alarm. I was working on getting my large oil reservoir out from under the back deck so I could check the oil. I had to move 2 batteries and took some connections loose off batteries after taking pictures. Put a gallon of oil in tank(2 stroke) and hooked batteries back up. Put the muffs on, turned the key and the alarm went off. Checked the oil tank at motor and manually filled it to right above low mark. Fired right up, ran for a minute and shut it down, still have alarm. Ideas ?

Are you absolutely positive you connected everything correctly? I had the same motor years ago before I re powered to a 4 stroke. The alarm will sound for low oil or high temp. Do you really need to remove the oil tank just to check the oil level? The sub tank is in the bilge and main tank under the cowling, are both tanks full?

The main tank is midway between lower mark and high mark, sub tank is 3/4 full. I took the signal sensor slide out and inspected, also moved the sensor slide up and down. Turned key on and no alarm. When I first checked sub tank it was almost completely out and I only put 7/8 gallon in it. I'm believing it was just low and it let me know. Should be good now.

it is always best to drain the main tank before removing the level sensor to keep any bad stuff from going into the pump.
and always replace the gasket/strainer with new when putting back in,
getting trash into the oil pump is bad
