Alarm Question

I have a 2004 115 Optimax. The piezo alarm under the dash is shot (no beep when turning key to "on"), so I went to radio shack today and picked up another. When I hooked it up and turned the engine to "on", I get a loud, noticeable beep. Problem is after the first short, loud beep, I get what sounds like continuous feedback at a much lower volume. There's a distinct difference between the "beep" and the noise afterwards. I checked voltage at the piezo plugs, and it's 12v anytime the key is on.

Do I have a short somewhere, or is the aftermarket piezo not the correct one?

Thanks for any thoughts on the issue.

Re: Alarm Question

Probably different but you can get used to that. As I recall, some engine controls would give you a quick beep as soon as the ignition switch was turned to the ON position. Purpose was to tell you that your warning circuit was working. This probably took place inside your engine mounted warning module as there is nothing else that could cause it.....you have to ground one side of the device and if the oil is ok, and the OT sensor isn't sensing OT, then ground has to come from somewhere and the module could surely do it.

I'm going to opt for a bad warning module. Tell you what. Take the ground wire off the piezo and connect your ohm meter between it and engine ground. Turn your ign sw to the ON position (to energize your warning module) and measure the resistance to engine ground of that ground wire going to the piezo. If you have anything but an open circuit, pull the plug on your warning module. If you still have continuity you have a wiring short somewhere. If none, the WM is bad. Disconnect the tan/tan/lt blue stripe wire from the OT sensor on the rear of the block. Check again. If open ckt, reconnect your module and check again. If not you have a wiring short. If still open, you have a problem with the OT sensor. Measure the wire you unplugged on it to ground to verify.
