HI Guys

further to my previous post- RE: overheat warning buzzer, is it possible to put a temp gauge in its place? I would imagine so, but do I need to get a new sensor/sender unit, or will the existing overheat sensor send a signal to a temp gauge?

Cheers

Yes it's possible. The trouble is finding a guage.I know they used to make a guage for that motor when it was new.Any Guage will recieve a signal. The main difference is the face and where the needle is set.You have an old volt guage?Try hooking it up while the motor is cool.Start it and watch it come up to temp, see if it moves the needle.
I'd try Teleflex or Faria. Then a local Mercury dealer. All dealers sell parts. Some guys really know their business. If you can find one of these guys you might get lucky.Try Jenkins Boat Sales,Pasadena,Md.Ask for Bob.He is one of the best parts guys there is(if he's still working).Jerry

Re: Alarm or Temp Gauge

Hey Jerry. I looked at Faria and they have some good kit- I dont mind too much what it looks like, so long as it works! My manual ( original Force Outboards) says that the alarm is set for 180degrees CELCIUS ( 356 F). Again- my engine was nowhere near those sorts of temps, however, I wonder, what temp range should I be looking for- any ideas the ideal temp or set temp for the thermostat? I looked up Jenkins but they have no website so far as I can tell, and that makes it Hard from Sydney..... I'll try and call them Tuesday Sydney Time and see how I go!

I sure hope you're mixing up your Celsius with your Fahrenheit!

Page 23, " OVERHEATING"

An overheat buzzer is supplied as part of your engine. This buzzer ( or the optional temprature gauge) must be installed to warn the operator to shut off the engine when the buzzer sounds or when the temprature exceeds 180 degrees on the temprature gauge.

Suppose they never did mention c or f! I just assumed ( ASSUME makes an *** out of U and ME) that would be a reference to celcius, being an Aussie and all! There again, the rest of the manual seems to be US Imperial ( US MARINE should have sounded my buzzer!). 180f is 82c........ My engine was still only warm to the touch though!

Re: Alarm or Temp Gauge

I think the temp should be Farenheight.Celsius 365 or 185 is way too hot.
Should be about 150-160 normal operating temp.Anything over the alarm starts to sound.
An old fuel guage should be good. Not a voltmeter.

Re: Alarm or Temp Gauge

on my motor ive installed a temp gauge and water pressure gauge, and still have the the factory overheat buzzer. at the top of the head youll see a slotted screw flush with the motor that screw plugs a cavity that goes to the cooling jacket in the motor. i removed the screw and put in a small threaded stub and a tee. i dont remember the sizes but all parts were bought at the hardware store and real easy to find. on one side of the tee ive got the nipple for the water pressure gauge on the other ive got the temp sender to the temp gauge, youll have to run one wire to the temp gauge from the sender. the gauges i bought were teleflex and they work great. i run at 150 degrees f and pressure at idle at two lbs and wot 15lbs

Re: Alarm or Temp Gauge

The factory sender is for the head temperature not the water temperature. Do like shytown did and install a water temp sender on the top of the head where the slotted screw is if you can get it out ofcourse. That way when you get the water guage hooked up you can see if your head sensor for the overheat buzzer is malfunctioning or not triggering the buzzer too early.

180? C.....wow that would be hot and you could kiss that motor...or just about any motor good bye.
Ok, 100?C = Boiling (....212?F)
0?C = Freezing (.....32? F)
so 180?F is....about 75?C, more or less.
All Good
