Have a 1999 5.7 mercruiser, alpha outdrive. Went out on the river the other night and the engine would not shut down.
had to disconnect the ignition wire from the switch. When I reconnected the switch and turned the key to start the engine a high pitched alarm sounded and the engine refuses to start. What happened? Never had a problem until this happened. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.

Does the motor fire, then die? Check the little plastic kill switch on the laniard below your shift lever. Mine was bumped just enough to cause problems----looked okay but was not all the way in.

Also, the alarm should always sound until you get oil pressure in the motor. It also senses if gear lube level is too low in your reservoir. The third reason is will go off is if your motor temp gets too high.

The big curiosity here is that this thing would not turn off. That leads to the switch a then to the wiring harness ,etc .The switch is an easy swap, but that swap burned you.SOO, now we get out the test light and the timing light and start testing for voltage ang spark.Do you have this equipment?

hondon---guess I need to read more carefully before jumping in. Micheal---sounds like the alarm sound may have been new to you--it should have been sounding all along whenever you turn the key on.
