HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHelp!

Heres what I have:

1996 Charger 19.5 ft bassboat
1995 ProMax 225 hp motor
trophy plus 24 or 25, cant remember, prop

Brought the boat with bad motor (200 Suzi with a bad cyl) to the shop to have them put the freshly rebuilt, crated 225 on. They spent a good amount of time rigging the boat, but when they take it down to the lake for testing, they continually get a buzzer when they get it up to high RPMs. It keeps buzzing until they drop down to idle.

My first thought was, ok, the prop is wrong and its over revving, right? The tech says no...thats not it. Low oil levels? No, thats a beep beep beep.

Can ANY of you tell us what might be causing the motor sensor/alarm to buzz on and stay on, once the RPMs get up there. After that, until it idles back down, the alarm keeps buzzing.

They cant figure it out, I have no clue and I need your help and input what the heck is causing it.

They lowered it ALL the way on the jackplate and it still does it, changing its position on the plate makes no difference. Would a bad impellor cause it to over heat? Would a prop with the wrong pitch or cup do it? If it didnt have those air holes on the inside of the blade, could it cause this???

They are starting to wonder if they need to take the jackplate off to make it sit right and get the right amount of water thru the impellor. Have any of you had alot of experience rigging bassboats and run into this? (they dont rig bassboats up here in Minnesota...walleye yes, but not rigs like this, usually)

Could it be a bad wire connection or short that feeds the alarm at high RPMs?

suggestions? thoughts? Ideas for them to check before I run up a $2500 bill here and not even get the boat running right...

email me at: ruralmania@yahoo.com if you have ANY ideas. I may not get the msg here right away if you leave it here but will check back hoping one of you has the answer.

Hi Pro,

I will run that by the techs and get their response. My gut feeling is that they dont know that answer, because I believe there has just been one tech in the boat when they test it. I left that message on their machine (sunday am) and they will check it, I am sure.

What does that imply if it is hot? Bad impeller? Or just that the motor is hot...?

Thanks a TON for your interest!!!

FAST4WARD, I believe the steady alarm is the overheat signal. If its like my BlakMax, the starboard (right, looking forward) side head has the heat sensor for the alarm. When it gets too hot it triggers the steady alarm.

I'm no expert, but here are my thoughts:
- what rpm are you obtaining at wide open throttle? (check your manual, but my guess is it should be no more than about 5400)
- Is the tell-tale water VERY hot to the touch (or even steamy)?
- Do you have temp and/or water pressure gages? If so, what (and when) do they read?
- How long after reaching hi rpm does it take for the alarm to go off; does it eventually go quiet by itself after bring down the rpm (how long?)
- Are you sure it is getting enough oil into the fuel?

If you think its not really running too hot (but be absolutely sure of this), then it could be a faulty sender or warning module, or even a short to ground in the sensor wire.

If its really too hot, is it hot on both heads? The temp sender for a temp gage, if you have one, would be in the opposite head, and could be showing acceptable temp range. If this happens, then you may have a bad thermostat in the hot head, or an obstruction in a water-way somewhere. You can also do a touch test to compare the heads.

Anyway, there are a lot of what-if's here. More information would be helpful.

Thank you for your reply. I will forward your thoughts to the crew working on it. The things you mentioned are all things they SHOULD know, but I never assume. THey are good guys, but every project presents new and sometimes unfamilar situations.

I know that the thermostat has not been changed even after the rebuild and that it sat for a while since being rebuilt. All factors that could apply. I am not working on it myself so I will run your thoughts over to the crew.

Thanks a ton!

Fast4wrd, the first thing I would do is to determine if it is really overheating or not. If you could hook up a temperature gauge to it, that should make it pretty apparent. I hooked one up quite a while ago and as I recall is was pretty simple. Also, I assume you are using double oil for the break in period? Good luck, sounds like you have a rocket!

Thank you ALL for your input.

Turns out, after all, it was a poppet valve.

The bill went from, sigh...$250 for mount and rig, to an end bill for $711 for test, test and retest and then finally, tearing it apart. The bill is not unreasonable considering what they did, I just hope that the seller of the motor warrents this work as promised. I expect they will...they are good people.

Also, yes to the double oil. We are.

again, thank you all for your time and thoughts on the matter. Those darn poppets...lol
