o.k. here goes I have a 1986 140 hp vro system, had the motor in twice this year already for a total of close to $1,000. replaced the water pump impeller , plugs linkage adjustment ect. there was still ice on are lakes so they never test drove it. I take it out starts hard, runs good at high speed, low speed rough. take it back they said tank has a lot of water in it. marina installed a water filter.(after they removed as much water as they could 4 inches in a 6 gallon jug) installed a new alarm test drove it and said it runs good. I told them I was worried about the vro system, the owner of the marina who I know said mix 50-1 oil put fresh gas in the tank non ethnol 89 plus octane. it will smoke a little than we can be postive your vro works. o.k. took it out today for a little while it was rough lots of waves. started perfect idled great. after about 20 min. a beep went off about every min. to 2 min. was getting good water circulation. stoped boat let idle still beeped. no weeds around inlets. read owners manual and repair manual . puzzled need some advice thanks ED:eek:

J/E Alarms

low oil alarm is a beep every 30 seconds. beep......................beep...................

no oil alarm is a beep every 1/2 second or so.beep, beep, beep

overheat alarm is a constant beep.beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep

check the oil in the oil tank. put enough oil in it to besure, and mark the side of the container. test run and see if alarm comes back on. if not run it a while. then check the tank, and the mark. and calculate the fuel usage, and the oil usage. if the ratio is 50:1 the vro pump is working. if it were mine, being a 1986, i would disable the oil side on the pump, and use premixed gas. cut the hose. and plug and clamp the engine side. unplug the wiring harness to oil tank, and unplug the harness to vro pump. the fuel side will still work as normal. when it goes out you replace with a standard fuel pump.

Overheat alarm is a constant horn, so anything else is usually VRO although it is possible to have overheat coming and going.

The VRO system should have been upgraded to VRO2 or OMS. For a better understanding of the issues, print and read this thread: http://continuouswave.com/whaler/reference/VRO.html

If you decide not to upgrade the VRO system to OMS, I would recommend that you do what most have already done and use the VRO pump for a pre-mix pump and eliminate the oil tank and the problems. If you want to continue with a mixing system, the only reliable way to go is to upgrade to OMS.

Remember that OMC stopped installing VRO systems around 1992. That's less than 9 years and there had to be good reason.
