Alarm going off and on/Temp gauge not working

I'm having two issues with my 2006 Tahoe Q4 Sport 4.3L Mercruiser V6 - one, the temp gauge will not work. A friend of mine who is mechanically inclined (I am not) said he couldn't see any reason why it wouldn't, connections were good, all fuses were good. What are some reasons this may not be working, and how can I fix it? Second problem, my alarm has been going off lately. I'm wondering if it is because it is overheating? But I can't tell since the temp gauge isn't working. It normally will go off after I've been running for a bit. Sometimes it will stay on, then eventually stop. Other times it will stay on for a few seconds then stop, then will start again and stop again, etc.

Since the alarm is going off, and the gauge doesn't work, the smart money would go on an overheat. Did you go back and touch the engine to see if it was hot or steaming?

To check the gauge, turn the key on disconnect the wire from the temp gauge sender and then just quicklytouch it to ground and let off, and see if the gauge pegs out to the hot side. If it does, the gauge is good.

If the gauge pegs out in the above test, replace the sender on the engine.

And get your cooling system fixed...........

Thanks Don. What are some things I can do to troubleshoot my cooling system?

The impeller should have been replaced at least once by now, and you can check the operation of the thermostat (or just replace it).
