Hi everyone!

I have a 1989 120 HP Evinrude 2 cycle outboard. As soon as I turn the key on the alarm goes off continuously.

From what I have read from this board that means there is a overheating problem - this is impossible becuase the engine has not even been started yet!

The alarm will go off every time I turn the key whether the engine sits for a day, week, or month. The water pump was just replaced. What is going on!?!?!?!

the temp switch must short out on the block.

check the wires for damage or kinking and shorting on the block.

if you cant find any damage disconect the temp sensor and see if it stops.
if it stops your temp sensor might be the problem.

if that all doesnt do it check the control box.

good luck

Re: Alarm goes off without Starting Motor!! HELP!

Disconnected it and the alarm still went off. Moved onto the powerbox Opened up the box unplugged and then plugged back in the black socket (kind of looks like an inline fuse holder) Then plugged it back in.

After I reconnected the socket the buzzer came on for less than 1 sec and then dies out within another second. It goes from really loud to off - sort of sounds like it is shorted out. I turned the key back and forth and it did this a few more times then changed to rapid fire. Then it went back to sounding like it shorted out. Does this mean I have a bad buzzer and nothing is wrong with my engine after all?

yes it is VRO, when the engine is started out of water you can see the oil coming out of the back with the water so the pump is working

Sure sounds like a defective horn/buzzer to me. I guess the other possibility is a short in the VRO warning systems (ie. from oil tank - low/no oil). I suppose you could turn the key on, then play around with the float in the oil tank. If this didn't change any of the wierd happenings I would definitely look for a new buzzer.

P.S. Buzzer on my '86 rude bit the dust last year.

Good luck!

All the sensor leads to the alarm are tan. You can test them by unplugging them all one at a time. If you unplug one and the alarm stops then you've pretty much pinpointed the problem. If none of them stop the alarm then I'd break open the controls and take a look at the buzzer itself.

I had the same problem. Defective horn was the culprit. Good Luck!!!
