Alarm always on

I have a 1991 Evinrude 50 HP motor. When I start the engine even when cold the alarm sounds continious and won't go off. (I can turn ignition halfway off to shut off alarm but that shuts off fuel gage too) This is on a Kayot pontoon boat if that matters.

With the key on, Disconnect the connector on the oil reservoir(If VRO equipped) and see if it stops. Then disconnect the tan wire leading to the temp sensor on the back of the head and see if it stops. If these don't do it, then it may also be the horn itself in the control box. They are know for doing this...

And please put future posts in the Johnson/Evinrude repair forum....

Thanks for the input - I have removed the tan wire and the wires from the oil reservoir last year with no change - what do I look for in the horn unit?

Interesting... I have been fighting exactly the same thing on my 1994 175-HP Johnson.

At this point I am 99% convinced the oil level sender in the oil resevoir is bad and have a new one on order.

In my case, disconnecting the leads to the high temp sensors (tow - one for each head) and the restricted fuel flow sensor would not silence the horn, but disconnecting the leads to the oil pickup did the trick.

The leads in my engine to that sensor are a pair of wires (brown and black) with simple push-on connectors under the cowling. With the key in the "run" position (but not running), disconnec the brown wire and see what happens. In my case, the horn stopped.

Good luck!

One other thought - disconnect the brown/tan wire going to the horn itself. If the horn continues to sound, it is bad and needs to be replaced. If it goes off, the problem is elsewhere.

Thanks for that info - I checked the wires to the oil tank - I had to cut them and add connector - that seems to solve the problem I'll probably get a new sensor
