I bought a Lowrance 335 fishfindeer/chartplotter and since I have a swimstep and Smart tabs I can't seem to find a good spot to mount my transom transducer. I have heard a little bit about these Airmar shoot thru transducers, are they expensive? Where can I find them? Thanks for the advice.
Sub

Re: Airmar transducers??

If you check in your manual on Page 29 it shows that you can use the supplied transducer epoxied to the hull to shoot thru. It would save you a lot of money if you can go down this road as buying another transducer would not be cheap to achieve the same ends,
What I did was to build a watertight box in ply and glass that onto the inside of the hull. Fill it with castor oil and hang the transducer in that. It works fine and the unit can easily be removed whereas if you epoxy it to the hull it becomes a little more permanent. Especially if you later discover it is not getting good returns and you have to re-locate it. If your hull allows it flood a small area with seawater and hang the transducer in the water. Check what respose you are getting in various location and at different speeds to find the optimum spot for fixing.

Re: Airmar transducers??

Hi,
I had an Airmar P79 in-hull transducer (235 KHz) before in my boat. It worked fine. No problem at all.
http://www.airmar.com/Product_Catalog/marine_catalog/inhull/ihcat_index.html

It was rather expensive. I had it interfaced with a Genoav 6 Elite chartplotter with built in depth display. Is the Lowrange 335 recieving depthinfo via NMEA? The Airmar P79 I had used NMEA to send signals to the chartplotter. Not all transducers use NMEA, for example I have a Navman in-hull transducer (in-hull puck) now with a stand alone depth display (Navman Depth 3100) that do not use NMEA, this in-hull puck is much cheaper (and work only with Navman depth instruments as far as I know)
http://www.navman.com/marine/products/transducers/index.html

Try to use your existing transducer and mount it in a box in-hull like AndyL mentioned.

Re: Airmar transducers??

Sub Sailor - I have never experienced an in-hull transducer so I don’t know how much performance loss there. In-hull mounts do not perform as well as transom mounted or thru-hull mounted transducers. Don’t know if it matters...perhaps I wouldn’t even know the difference!?!?! If you mentioned what vessel you are putting the transducer on maybe someone here can give you suggestions for a location to mount the ‘ducer on the transom.

Re: Airmar transducers??

Airmar does not sell directly to the public but its nice to go to their website (a rather poor web site I might add) and look up which models them make that are compatable with your depth finder. It is good to rmember that Airmar makes about 3/4 of the transducers in use in the world today and in may cases where they are not the original equipment manufacturer they still make models that are compatable. That of course is because for the most part these days if you match the frequency you can use the transducer.

As to the in-hull mounts they make several different models. As mentined the common one is the P79. They are cheap. I think you can pick one up for around $80, about the same price as a transom mount. They also make other in-hull mounted transducers but they tend to get pretty expensive. I have one of their somewhat-new high performance models for small fish finders (it can accept up to 1 kW of power) in my boat and have been using it since last spring. I've used it in shallow fresh water (up to about 80 feet) and in deep salt water (in excess of 2,000 feet) and it far out performs the thru-hull that I had before it. Target definition and separation with it is simply incredible, something that really shows up over bait pods or in shallow water when really trying to pick out bottom detail. Anyway, I like it and I'm glad I plunked down the bucks for it.

Oh, the place to buy Airmar transducers is from their retail outlet, its the least expensive place and on top of that they always have stock or are the very first to get anything that is on a national backorder. The place is called Gem Electronics, they are in South Carolina. Oddly enough they do not have a web site. I was going to give you their phone number but the one I have saved in my phone somehow has gained one to many numbers and I don't know which one is wrong. Someone should be able to give it to you.

Thom

CAUTION! Although frequency is pretty much standardizing around 50hz and 200khz in the recreational market, the significant difference in transducers can be the impedance. They are not all alike! Mismatched impedance between the head and the transducer can take out either or both pieces of equipment. Matching the power will give you better performance, too. And, obviously, you wouldn’t put a 300w transducer on a 1000w head.

Re: Airmar transducers??

Sorry for the delay in my response, we went out of town for the weekend, went fishing. Tons of great information from you guys, Thank You very much. As I mentioned before in my post I was worried about where to put my transducer due to installing Smart Tabs. This weekend I had my wife drive the boat while I got back there and looked around, seems I probably will be able to mount my transducer back there as the turbilence isn't near as bad as I thought it was. I'm probably going to give that a try and if it sux I will be following some of the great advice given here. Once again, Thank you for all the great info!!

1subsailer;

If you can send a drawing or picture of your transom, I may be able to make a recomendation. The Smart Tabs should not cause turbulance at any time if installed correctly. By the way how are they working for you?

Hi John,
Well I'm still trying to work with them. Seems I am getting quite a bit of spray back there from them. I went ahead and installed the transducer on my transom, only had a chance to test it on the water for about 5 minutes, seems as though the "turbulance" from the tabs aren't interfering with the transducer. I am hopeing to mess with them some more this weekend, I will update you on the progress. Thanks for the help John.
Sincerely,
John
