air vent in Nissan gas tank consequences

What are the consequences of the air vent being closed while running the motor. I just realized the last few times I've taken the boat out that I have had the air vent on the gas tank closed. The motor has been starting up okay but when I kick it in gear it idles really rough and tries cutting out on me. Also when I run wot and go to slow a bit it jerks as if it's trying to cut out there too.. Could the vent on the gas tank being closed be causing this?

with the vent closed, your motor will soon run out of fuel and die. sort of like trying to suck water thru a straw that someone pinches the straw off. no mater how much your motor tries to draw in fuel it cant. - Open your vent.

if you keep trying to run it with the vent closed, eventually you will destroy your motors fuel pump.

rule one when boating with outboards. first thing you do is open the vents, next thing you do is check how much fuel you have. if you have oil injection, you check to see how much oil you have in the reservoir.

Okay thanks! I'll definitely have the vent opened up next time I take it out! I've always had it open in the past.. Just a dumb mistake the last few times I've taken it out! Hopefully this solves the rough idle problem! Thanks again!!

As an anecdote, found a lonely boater drifting to open waters, engine had died due to fuel starvation, didn't follow the correct engine starting procedures. Tank's air vent was found closed when reached. Though he had an engine failure, engine starter right after vent was opened and primed again, instant color returned to his pale face. Now he knows what he must do before venturing boating to far away distances. Bad boating experiences do teach you..

Happy Boating
