I have a 84 90hp Evinrude that will run great as long as I have the engine cover off. As soon as I put on the cover the idle slows way down then motor dies. I can't find any pinched lines or blockage on the air intakes on cover or to carbs.
Any help would be appreciated

Re: Air Starvation

Hi Jesse
You have an exhaust leak some where. The engine is sucking it's own exhaust. Bad exhaust cover gasket, power head to exhaust housing gasket, exhaust gasket in lower unit. Might be a hole or crack in exhaust housing.

Jesse,

Ditto alcan. You should be able to see evidence of it.

Exhaust cover gasket-this is the plate between the two cylinder heads on the back of the engine.

Powerhead gasket-this is the connection between the powerhead and the upper exhaust housing, look all the way around it.

Broken exhaust housing. Look just below where the power head meets the exhaust housing.

If you run the engine with the engine backed down into the water, you may be able to hear it.

Also check the vacuum lines that run along the side of the block from the combustion chambers to the carburetor base plates.
