You should be able to see evidence of it.<br /><br />Exhaust cover gasket-this is the plate between the two cylinder heads on the back of the engine.<br /><br />Powerhead gasket-this is the connection between the powerhead and the upper exhaust housing, look all the way around it.<br /><br />Broken exhaust housing. Look just below where the power head meets the exhaust housing.<br /><br />If you run the engine with the engine backed down into the water, you may be able to hear it.<br /><br />Also check the vacuum lines that run along the side of the block from the combustion chambers to the carburetor base plates.
