beginning the tear down of my '56 Evinrude Big Twin 30 hp today and found a quite worn-out air silencer acoustical liner in the casing. the OEM part number does not come up in the parts guide. It appears to be fiberglass insulation. Can this material be replaced with anything?

Evinrude didn't line their cowlings with anything until the late 1960s, so whatever is in your cowling was added some time in the last 54 years. If you want the cowling lined (those motor are fairly noisy) you can probably custom make one out of some acoustic foam padding and glue it in place.

Hmmm...the part is shown in the diagram. it is wrapped around a perforated tube. will the area get too hot for foam? What about steel wool?

I have used foam with good success.

Toss that disintegrating foam. It is only there to make it quieter. You probably won't notice any difference without it. If you insist, you can use some new foam (not rubber). And definatly not steel wool. You don't want your motor ingesting steel strands.
