Air horn?

Hello everyone, got a question about air horn setup if anyone is familiar. Recently purchased a 88 Chaparral 198 cuddy. It has a nice Hadley dual air horn setup but is missing some parts. Previous owner just used a handheld horn. The horns look good, and it has an air hose that runs back along the gunwale and just stops, (along with the power wires that run from the switch on dash). There is another air line that starts there and runs to a metal box near the battery, and then to the top of the engine (valve cover I think, but I didn't look too close yet). Anyways, anyone have this setup, is all of that just for the horn? Do I just need a new solenoid to run the 2 lines and wires to, or do I need an air tank also? If so, anyone know what model #. I checked Hadleys website, but its not real informative.
Additionally, I was thinking I may be able to setup a small onboard compressor at the same time, for filling tubes or as a livewell aerator.
Any help is appreciated.

Re: Air horn?

Hi Scooby. Welcome to the forum. :)

Compressors for marine air horns are common, smaller than a Campbell’s soup can. Basically you just need something to push air thru the trumpet(s). For some reason Italy seems to dominate the marine air horn market. I know there is humor in that somewhere, I just haven’t found it yet.
:)

Try web searching for a marine air horn compressor. Marinco sells compressors separately (part #10102 – 12vdc) but the mfg doesn’t matter, the compressor and trumpet are only connected by that little air tubing thingy. If they don’t have it here at iboats in the MegaMall, you might have to order it from a boat parts place (West Marine).

Btw, you should have a momentary switch to active the compressor.

Good luck! :)
