Hi there,

I have recently bought a mercury classic fifty(45HP) motor that I had my friend get back to running condition. In the process of fixing it, he discovered that the whole air filter assembly is missing. Could anyone tell me where I could find one of these?

thanks, Michael

Never saw an ob with an air filter and what you seed on inboards is not an air filter, but a flame arrestor. If your mechanic wants to know about your air filter maybe you need to grab your engine and run as fast as you can.

The thing that has been on most Mercs for a lotta years, especially the larger hp engines is an air box and the purpose was to eliminate/reduce the engine noise that comes out through the carb with the butterflies wide open. It's a hollow box. It does help somewhat as at high speeds, the air through the box turns 180- degrees and in doing so heavy particles can smash into it and not make the turn and wind up in your engine.

Hummm... I guess Optimax and Verado's aint outboards or the 75-115 4 strokes as they all use a air filter. That 45hp engine just has carbs and no air box or cover.
