I am looking to install an air conditioner in my '01 Larson Cabrio 290 and I'm looking for advise on what size unit to buy and what features I should be looking for? I see many units ranging in size from 5k to 16k btu's in 110 and 220 volts. And I'm not planning on installing a gen set, just looking for use while dockside. Thanks.

Re: Air conditioning fitment

I know these guys and will vouch for them. I believe them to be the best and affordable. They are local to me but ship worldwide.

You will find a chart and formula to determine your size. Length x Width x 6' average height x 14 BTU

I would go with a self contained unit. You will need an underwater thruhull, with seacock and strainer, and an above water thruhull for exhaust water.

Good Luck!

Nice boat! Have you contacted Larson to see what brand and btu output they offered in it originally?

Based on my experience with the 7,000 btu unit on my 27', I'd think 10-12,000 btu would be in the ballpark. Mine is 'adequate' for 90 degrees and high humidity, but I need to turn it on early in the day and make sure I keep the cabin closed. Reverse cycle heat is nice to have too, though I've found that a small space heater or two also does a good job.

Larson did away with the website archival information on their past models, but Four Winns, Searay, Carver, Wellcraft all still have them. Some searching there might give you a clue on capacity, too.

Good luck- A/C is a nice add-on.

A 12K reverse cycle heat/air combo would fit the bill nicely. If you're doing a self install, please make sure you follow directions closely and check online for tips and assistance. As Sasto mentioned, you'll need to bed a thru-hull fitting with brass 1/4 turn shut off, strainer, water pump, drip pan for the unit, drain run to the shower sump, and water discharge. Also, make sure the water pump is wired to the AC control box, so the AC can't kick on without kicking on the water pump first. Don't forget, proper layout for the AC discharge box and mounting the thermostat.
