I have a 1987 150 mer. that is blowing air out pee hole and intermediate water spirts. it increases water flow at higher rpm's but not enough. I took the plug out on top of the block, and the hose loose on the lower right. water comes out very good. it acts like compression but there is no water in cyl's or on the plugs. also no skip. what do i need to look at next

Welcome to iboats.

You might have a weak pump that still seems to pump a lot of water. That's where I'd start. Other possibilities are blockages and leaks. Leaks are easier to find. Blockages often require disassembly to some degree. I believe the telltale water will come out strong when one or both thermostats open, but weak when they're both closed. At higher RPMS a bypass valve opens and dumps the water pretty much straight through. So you'll get good telltale when the motor warms up and when it's revving. Cold and at idle, you get a few spurts and that's about it.

Re: air coming out pee hole, and little water

My 87 xr2 has small holes in the thermostats..
this allows a small flow when thermos are closed
to aid in filling the block..allows air to exit from top of block this is where the spitting is from.
it also has the line to the peehole "teed" to the dump line to the exhaust..so at cold start warm/up the air and spitting is normal..when the thermo,s open it shoots a steady stream when block is full..as per willyb..the condition of your waterpump, waterpump housing will fill block quickly with a good pump ,or slower with a worn pump...the stream is never as strong on these motors as the later models are with the full block /full stream design..
A good water pressure guage, and temp guage will tell you when to change pump .pee stream really wont

With stats out it has a little flow. with them in very little flow.checked popet valve , it is ok. it might be the pump, but it has strong water flow coming to the heads from the water hoses that goes to the thermostat housings.dont have a water pump pressure gage though and pump has not been reimpllered in years as far as I know.
thanks for help

Sounds like it is time for a new impeller or whole pump assy. I think I would start out there and replace the thermostats also, they are about $10 ea.
