What the difference between air cooled motors and water cooled motors? I have an engine that has a water pump but says its air cooled. Confused

Most air cooled motors have air cooled powerheads<br /> and water cooled exhaust legs.

Depending on your type of motor, the water pump is usually used to cool the exhaust gases and the lower leg, while the powerhead is air-cooled like a lawnmower engine. In air-cooled engines wih a water pump, the lower leg will fry if the water pump goes out. Some air-cooled engines do not rout the exhaust thru the lower leg but use a separate pipe that can heat up without hurting anything. Depends on your type of motor.

I don't think the 6 hp is air cooled -- not sure about the 2hp. I think some of the '60s Clintons (7 1/2 -- maybe others) had the water-cooled lower unit and air-cooled powerhead that other listers are describing. Some Sears Gamefishers into the '80s had it.
