I said I would report on the Suzi/'Rude 70 EFI 4 stroke. I spent a couple of hours propping her out today. With a 14x18" SS I got 38 mph (GPS) at 5800 rpm Started easy as a car, quiet as a car. Excellent hole shot, smooth, quiet cruise at 4000 rpm, upper 20s in mph.

My Son's Merc 90 (2 stroke) can't get his Montauk any faster with a 19" prop, though it will exceed 40 with a 21" prop.

This motor is everything Fishff said it is, and more. I am very pleased with it. I recommend it.

Thanks Fishnff.

Happy boating.
JB

Re: Ahoy, Montauk and Fishnff!

Thanks for the report, JB. I'm still dilly-dallying around with restoring my whaler and haven't put much effort into the motor yet. Probably has something to do with the fact that after sitting unused for 3.5 years, the 1982 Johnson fired up immedately this weekend. Go figure. The only thing visibly wrong with the motor is the steering arm (midsection?),which has disentigrated, but i'm weary of putting much $ into it. Any thoughts?

Hi, Montauk. If your '82 Johnny is a 70 I would fix it. On the other hand, if it is a cross scavenged V4 100 I wouldn't make the investment. I'm sure there are guys out there who would disagree. Those big V4s were very reliable dinosaurs, but my old Sakonnet became a much nicer boat when I took a 100 off and put a 70 on it.

Happy boating.
JB

Howdo, JB. I must be mistaken on the year of my Johnson (hehe), it's a 90 hp. I would think your recommendation will still apply, since they are both big V4's. I must say that 'ole Johny treated me well over the years - many hours of skiing and many days 10+ miles out in the Gulf without her every leaving me stranded - I suppose my sentimental/monatary values are out of proportion. Any guess on a salvage value? Taker easy and thanks,
montauk
