Aggressive old days coming back??

There was a bit more tolerance for very lightly political threads these past few days.Everything stayed very friendly and respectful.Quite honestly,I really enjoyed.Treedancer came down from his evergreen tower and seemed to yearn for some civilized confrontation.Plywoody started climbing in his pen to write some wood pulp fiction.Everybody was very respectful until.....
In the gas consumption thread a Seaman started using the term "Traitor".
Here we go again. I thought that we were well beyond that and that we had ascended to a level of mutual respect in our threads as a matter of course.
Please let us act as grown ups.That way we can agree to disagree in a civilized way like neighbors on the same dock,while we can feel comfortable enough to invite each other to drink a cup of coffee aboard each other's boat.

I will openly admit that i post some very opinionated and hostile post's....or from my perspective they are very sharp angled statements, They are meant to challenge one's beliefs form the very core. I mean no personal harm to anyone, but to one's personal beleif system they may seem like a attack....they are not. But a sharp angled statement or question you better damm well know the answer to your opinion..including myself i can tell you it's sometime's hard to answer


I have found just for myself...that i no longer take anything for granted..but my responsibility's are great and i need to hide my ego and dig for the real truth. many time's i am wrong and many time's i am right....But i take peace in the fact that even though i may be wrong or right and get my feeling's hurt a little eventually i can make a good decison effecting people's live's and not worry about doing the right thing.


A good hard debate is alway's healthy...it create's a strong healthy mind and open's eye's for us all.

Like it or not, this is what has made America such a success story...

Now as to a hot cup of coffee with a freind...let us put aside opinion's and enjoy each others company.. A good strong mind full of life and positve thnking is damm refreshing..even if it's wrong...

ive found that people treat there friends with respect, in reguards to debate.

its when a good debate goes from the cup of coffie with a friend to an argument with personal attacks. that it goes sour......if everyone practises tollerance, we could have super intelligent discussions on a variety of topics, that would make the group stronger as a whole.

but attacking a person or thier idea is just detremental to the whole idea of intelligent discussion.

I guess I see a difference between attacking a person, and attacking their ideas. The thread that started all of this trouble had some really scary ideas floating around in it. I don't think I attacked anyone personally--I certainly didn't do anything to justify my being called a "traitor"--but I guess I'm guilty of attacking a few ideas. Back in the bad old days, it was personal attacks that really brought things down in DC. I think you can still have an intelligent discussion, even if a few people's ideas or beliefs get "attacked" or questioned, as long as there's no name-calling or hate-mongering.

One problem I see is that a lot of people tend to argue according to their gut, thus attacking their ideas is perceived as a personal attack. Not quite sure what to do about that one. I know I've seen a few threads in DC which hit close to home, but I always tried to address the ideas in them instead of calling other people names.

I have learned to avoid topics that can get me upset, I look at it this way, A person has the right to fly the rebel war flag but if its going to get alot of folks mad. why do it?

Nothing of the kind, Vlad. The notion I referred to was that we are going to get softer on political squabbles and attacks.

I am sure I would enjoy coffee with rolmops.

One does not attack the person, but a idelaogy is another thing. Generally a one finds comfort in a train of thought and therefore bond's strongly to that. Yes there are many way's to dislodge a person from what he or she think's to be the truth.....but in fairness a good wack in the face...aka a wake up call most often win's the day. Time is the fire in wich we burn opp's and all of our candle's so to speak are limited..Only ego's have stood in the way of humanity progressing....and i for one have little time for that very little time....Umm not that i have a ego that is...

Lissen, dudes. I spent 10 years in the Navy and 15 years in the Tech College business. I drank coffeee that would dissolve a stainless steel spoon.

If it is black and wet and a little sweet it will do.
