What are the proper oils for a AQ 290 dp-b I read in the manual regular 30w motor oil and other places I read 70-90 gear oil? Fixing to reassemble my 290 after exploding the upper gear unit and wanna know the truth on oil lol!

Re: Age old question

Volvo spec in the manuals for that vintage show single prop units use same as engine oil, while DuoProp units use the 80-90wt.

Latest advice from Volvo on DP's is to go full synthetic, 70-90wt I think is the viscosity.

Re: Age old question

Ok i have been redoing my drive had to replace my whole upper gear unit on mine since it decided to explode its self and broke some teeth off gear. I had been using motor oil prior to that failure and wondered if that was the cause? So I keep getting mixed results on the oil type to use. Also since I still have the drive in (2) pieces upper is off right now it will make it faster to go ahead and pour to quarts or so in the lower before I put the upper back on?

Re: Age old question

yes, using motor oil on the DP drive can grenade the upper.

I recommend adding oil after you pressure test (after assembly)

FWIW, I run Amsoil synthetic gear lube
