I have inherited a really nice Evinrude 18 H.P. Evinrude "Fastwin" motor. It is very clean and so far runs great out of the water, although water from the engine was circularly spraying out of the exit hole (warm to hot indeed)instead of streaming.
1) Is this normal?
2) what is the age of this motor Serial# 18802M-E11737
3)should I use it?...or does this belong in our local maritime museum? Any help is greatly appreciated.

1) Yes, that's normal. They don't have a 'tell tale' like newer engines. A good healthy spray is a good sign.

2) Model number 18802 is a 1968 2 cylinder evinrude, displacing 22.0 cubes, and making 18hp at 4500rpms. It uses a Champion J4J (Now J4C) plug gapped at 0.030 and runs on a 50:1 fuel/oil mix.

3) Yes if it runs! Many of these engines are still in regular service. It won't be an antique till it's 60-70 years old. Then again I'm a little biased here...

Run it! Those motors last a long time with good upkeep. I would change lower unit lube (new washers on fill/drain) replace impeller (cheap insurance) and run fresh fuel with a quality oil. I had a 1971 18hp that was a fantastic outboard...why did I sell it? >kicking self< :(
