After replacing everything twice and although my lower unit holds pressure and vacuum I'm stil getting water in the gear oil. Now the mechanic is suggesting the driveshaft is worn or pitted.
At this point it seems it may be better and cheaper to replace the lower unit with an SEI aftermarket unit. Has anyone tried these?

what model year are you working on. Drive shafts are cheaper than lower units.

They're fine.

a lot of info on this here. do a search for "SE116" a few good threads pop up. You will find that there are mostly all positive opinions of htis unit. I actually ordered a full unit this week and waiting for it to come in. with a 3 year warranty you cant go wrong, and its all new

This is for a 1995 225 HP Vindicator. I know the driveshaft is cheaper but the mechanic can't guarantee this is the problem. I'm already $400 in to repairs with no resolution so at this point a new lower unit for under a $1000 could ending up being cheaper in the long run. The unit is holding pressure and vacuum yet is still getting water in somewhere under load.

How did it work out TS

Sorry to bring this old thread but I can not find much info on aftermarket lower units. I am getting ready to order an aftermarket lower unit for a 95 150HP Johnson from Hinkley Marine and the guy has been stand up in answering all my questions, great service. Aftermarket for $995 seems better than $1495 and even $1995 but like they say, when a deal seems too good...
