1985 Mercruiser 5.7L Inboard Motor
1985 Mercruiser SE 106 Outdrive

Background

The engine ran good and everything shifted smoothly
I replaced the impeller last week. I did not move or adjust any cables.
I forgot to put the out-drive in F before I dropped the lower unit.

I have attempted to reinstall the lower unit many times.
I have the throttle/shifter in F
I have the shift shaft fully CW at the 12oclock position
I have the prop fully CCW.
And everything installs without problem

Then engine runs great! When I shift to F or R the interrupter shuts down the engine.
My local shops keep telling me to follow to above process and everything will be fine.

Question

Because I disassembly in lower in N should I reassemble the lower in N?

did the upper brass shoe SLIDE onto the lower splined shaft before you tightened the nuts?
If this is happening shifting into gear , you did something to bind everything up

The brass shoe slide over the spines quite nicely. I did have to rotate the prop to have the main shaft line up then it slid in smoothy too.

I am about ready to put a really big hole in the boat or bypass the shift interrupter.

It worked before you worked on it so , something was missed. You need to pull the drive to very that the cable is moving freely that that you can manually shift the drive into gear and out of gear freely.
Considering you only dropped the lower then it was assemble incorrectly. and need to be dropped again to figure out what you not doing .
