after further investigation

I have my problem narrowed down and a quick fix for now,but still have no idea what is wrong.

I have a 78 55hp evi and it starts up fine,idles fine and warms up great, drive the boat around,stop to fish,maybe even a few times of stop/start and its ok but then all of a suddent it wont fire back up,which resulted in my tow in last time out. however if I manually open the throttle on the engine I can get it to fire up again. since then I have cleaned the carbs, but still same problem,I could replicate this in my drive way with only running it a few mins and a few start stops.

anyone have any ideas what may be causing it not to fire after a few start stops? and is there a way to open the throttle from the drivers seat without taking the cover off the motor? it seems to only start with the key if its in neutral.

what kind of gas are u using ?? I have heard the old johnsons dont like to run on the gas these days ??try and get ethanol free or at the least add some octane booster ,you may be fowling the plugs from not havning hot enough gas to burn ?? I had to do it with my 65 merc ..
