I have a Klamath 18 ft Center Console I am working on re decking and carpeting.
I am going to carpet the deck Gray and the bench seats Black.
The outside is Bare Aluminum and is going to stay that way. The interior walls have been painted blue and peeling. I am going to strip them with airplane stripper. go over them with lacquer thinner and wash them with Dawn for oil removal. Is there any self etching primers in aerosol I can use that will give me good adhesion? I am looking to just paint the visible exposed walls on the interior and the center console Navy Haze Gray. I really don't want to invest in buying a compressor and spray gun yet. Thanks for any input this whole aluminum paint thing is confusing.

Zinc Chromate is the only thing that works worth a darn on aluminum unless you have a commerical wash primer available to you

Using Dawn might be a problem. Follow it up with, or replace it with, thinners. Any left over soap residue can affect paint adhesion.

You may paint directly over the Zinc Chromate primer. Roll and tip method works pretty good for large areas that are too large for spray paint cans.

You really will not need the additional epoxy primer. The zinc chromate primer needs to be applied to bare aluminum (that has been lightly sanded) that really should be wiped with 50/50 vinegar and water and a coating of the zinc chromate.

Be careful when you are buying the zinc chromate and make sure it is exactly that. Many stores will try to sell you zinc phosphate and other stuff which is meant for galvanized metal.

Moeller makes zinc chromate rattle can primer.
