aerator pump, nut, & strainer - what order

First you must remember that there are no dumb questions.:)

Look at the attached image of three items. An aerator pump, the related nut, and a strainer. Obviously the pump goes inside the transom but then does the nut go on the outside and then the pump would be tight up against the inside of the transom or does the nut go on the inside and the strainer tightens up against the outside of the transom? If the nut goes on the outside I assume that I must cut off some of the threaded portion of the pump so the strainer does not protrude behind the transom.

If you could explain in detail it sure would be appreciated.

Put the nut on, flat side facing away from the pump. Insert pump through hole in transom. Screw on the strainer. Tighten the whole assembly by running the nut up to the transom. Measure how much the the pump extends too far forward from the transom. Loosen the nut, remove the strainer, and remove the assembly. Cut the tube the amount you measured. Reassemble as above, using 3m 4200 sealant liberally to prevent water intrusion.

Did that make sense?

Yeah, it made sense and was very clear but unfortunately I meant pro bass fisherman tonight and he told me to put the nut on the outside of the transom and then cut the remaining threaded portion so that the strainer would screw on but be very close to the transom.

All in all, the vote is now a tie.:)

No tie, you win. The nut goes on the outside. Do it the other way and you'll be doing it again before too long, the strainer is not suitable for securing the pump ...

+1....the nut HAS to go on the outside, otherwise the whole assembly will pull through the transom eventually, as Outsider said. The strainer just isn't strong enough to hold it in place by itself.

Hey everyone, thanks a bunch....now I can get to work. NYBo, I really appreciated the clear and concise instructions and I suspect your method would work but I have to go with the majority.

Thanks again everyone....great group,

Don
