I have a 130 lbs 13 yr old I want to buy some beginner/trainer water skis for. I saw a pair of Hydroslide HS387 trainer skis for kids up to 125 lbs. Would I regret pushing the weight limit to 130+ on these skis? Or should I go up to an adult size and hope their not to big?

Thanks for your help,

Paul

You would probably be fine right now but I would reccomend looking more into the future. Hes a bit over the limit now but by the end of summer might be ? pounds over the limit. Im sure the length will become an issue as he grows, also binding size may be limited on the smaller set. By thirteen their legs are usually pretty strong I would say go the next bigger set even if they are small adult skis. Get a pair that has the rear toe plate on one of them so if he really takes to it you will have the ability to slalom down the road a bit. New or used is fine for now if going used make sure the bindings are in GOOD condition and function as they should. When he first starts trying to get up have a few adults in the water with him to help him up the first few times. Even to hold the side of each ski to help keep them lined up, remember knees in chest and stay in a ball until the skis are on top of the water then stand up slowly but keep those knees bent always. Kids seem to want to stand right up instead of letting the boat do the work for them so focus you instructions that direction, take breaks when they start to get tired or frustrated. Try to have one person giving instructions instead of the whole boat yelling "tips" it overloads them and makes everything worse. I have seen kids get up pretty much their first go at it and others take a lot of trying before it clicks for them. Be patient and keep it fun, good luck.

Take him with you when you purchase them, I recommend a set of adult starter skis, skis last forever if cared for and the added surface area will make it easier to get up. The driver will just have to be more careful and ease into the trottle a bit easier since he probably doesn't have the grip strenght of a teenager or adult in his hands. I went to adult skis as soon as possible. Was wanting to slalom.

Go with a brand name entry level ski, like a Connelly Odessey or Obrien, I prefer the traditional styled skis much more as they are much more fun once you get up. They will run $130-$150 versus unknown brand skis for 115-130, but the quality is generally much better, better boots, better ride, less flex. Well worth the extra $20, would not go out and spend high dollars for the upper level skis or popular wide bodies at this time.

My two cents.

well the boy weighs as an adult. the beginners he won't use more than a few times. but if you are going to be teaching others, his friends, family, etc. you might invest in a pair. i have a 40 year old set of beginners, that we still use with the younger family members. i also still use my original Cypress Gardens skis. until you get to the want to do competition skiing. don't go overboard on price. you can get good skis, without breaking the bank.
