hey guys,

i have a boat that is rated for 100 hp engine..i was thinking of going with a larger engine like 125 or 150.. would this hurt the boat.. what u think?
One thing to really consider is how close your scuppers are to the waterline. The extra weight of an additional 25-50 hp could put you in the red zone. Remember to think about what it would be like with a full load.

Also, make sure your transom is in top notch shape

-andy
I think you really need to re-think this. If your boat is currently insured and you over power it (more power than tag indicates) your insurer may not cover you in the event of an accident. And heaven forbid, if anyone is serioulsy injured you are in one deep pile of doo-doo.
Yes it could affect the handling under power. About a 125 max I would say. It is your boat, Also it is a lot more simple if you go with what you had. Tim
Well first off, why do you want to increase your horsepower?? What are you wanting to gain exactly??.....I ask because maybe its something you can get by switching props or adjusting mounting height or something of the like
Well now I would think that a boat that would max out at 35 mph with a 100 hp on the back might handle a tad bit differently than the same boat skipping along the top of the waves with a 150 sitting on the transom. The lawyers will love you if you ever get sued from an accident.
catfish:
You have been given some good advice already.

I would not personally put an outboard that exceeds the recommended HP rating for the same reasons.

And will add one DNR/Game warden could give you a ticket.
