My 1973 115 horsepower outboard died last week. A piston let loose and I now have no compression. All of the mechanics I talk to say it is not worth spending $2000 to fix the problem because of the age of the motor and the odds that something else will break. I am in need of a new 115 horsepower motor and would appreciate suggestions, especially between evinrude, johnson & mercury.

Howdy, Fuzz. 2 Stroke or 4 stroke? If you want to stay 2 stroke, the Johnson is the class of the field at 115hp with their 60 degree V4 looper. A second choice would be the Merc Optimax 115.

Consider 4 stroke. They are smoother, quieter, cleaner, more "drivable", and more economical to operate.

The Yamaha is probably the leader with their EFI 115. Merc (Yamaha powerhead) and Suzuki also offer EFI 115s.

Red sky at night. . . .
JB

I just purchased a new 50hp and, after doing a LOT of shopping around for Hondas, 'Rudes, Mercs, and Yamis, I'll give you my 2 cents. 1) Go with a 4-stroke EFI you'll pay more now but be MUCH happier latter. 2) Go with a dealer you feel comfortable with. How is their service dept.? 3) What kind of warranty will you be getting? Just for the record, I went with Merc. Cheaper than the Yami, a dealer I feel will be there if I need him, and a 3 year warranty.
